In June, 2023, City Council debated whether they should repair, renovate, build new, or relocate City Hall. In September, 2023, City Council made the decision to renovate City Hall. Great Plains Asbestos Control of Kearney began removal of asbestos-containing materials and mold remediation in the City Hall building at 220 N. Hastings Ave., in late 2023. Asbestos removal and mold remediation is slated to be complete in February.
Hastings City Council members discussed during their Feb. 19, 2024 work session design options for the council chambers and building exterior.

Design plans are scheduled to be complete around April. Interior demolition is anticipated to be complete around May. Construction is scheduled to start around August and be completed around March 2026.

This is a tentative timeframe and subject to change for a variety of reasons.

City Hall, known for its white marble exterior, was constructed in 1963 for use as a bank. The City of Hastings acquired the property in 1984 and has used it to house various municipal offices since that time.

In addition to the council chambers, City Hall is also home to the administration, development services and finance departments.
