In 2022, The City of Hastings implemented a water main replacement program. Hastings has about 205 miles of water main. Parts of the system are aging (up to 140 years old), undersized, and the rate of pipe failures has doubled in the last 20 years. To address these challenges, it is the City’s goal to replace 1% of our water main system annually. Initial focus is to replace 4 inch, cast iron water main in residential areas as it is some of the oldest in the system and also the smallest. New main installments will primarily be 8” ductile iron pipe.

In conjunction with the main replacement, the city is also removing lead water service lines in those same neighborhoods. There are currently about 1500 lead water service lines in Hastings. A two-person crew was hired in 2022 with the exclusive purpose of lead water service replacement. The goal is to have all lead water services replaced in 10 years.

In 2021, the Senate passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to address aging systems nationwide. 50 billion dollars from this program has been directed towards the removal of lead water services. These funds have been distributed to the states with the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) assuming oversight. Hastings is currently the only city in Nebraska participating in the lead water service replacement program and is eligible to receive 62% reimbursement for all work devoted to the lead removal efforts.
