What is a Creative District? ¿Qué es un Distrito Creativo?
Creative Districts are designated cultural and economic areas where innovation flourishes and neighborhoods come together in the name of art. They provide significant economic impact by creating purposeful spaces like art galleries, theatres, and music venues, attracting employees and businesses. The Nebraska Arts Council (NAC) runs the Nebraska Creative District Program to support Nebraska Communities in utilizing the arts as an economic driver.

Downtown Hastings is the Heartbeat of the Community. The “H” in Heartbeat stands for Hastings and the word “heartbeat” contains both of the words, art and beat. The Downtown contains a vibrant art scene with the existence of various sculptures and murals as well as the beat with the Listening Room Concert Series.

Creative DIstrict Certification provides the opportunity for a $10,000 Creative District Certification Grant as well as the potential to apply for a further $250,000 Creative District Development Grant. These grants will enable the District to pursue identified projects to enable and promote the arts as an economic driver.

The Business Improvement District (BID) is the district administrator and leads the application for creative district certification. The BID has partnered with the City of Hastings, Chamber of Commerce, and various other entities, artists, and residents to pursue this designation. This group, named PULSE, is comprised of approximately 40 members, who are actively involved in completing this certification process. Without PULSE there would be no Heartbeat. PULSE stands for Partners Undertaking Local Solutions for Expression.

The Project is currently in the Strategic Planning phase in which feedback from the completed Community Engagement phase will be analyzed and utilized to draft the Strategic Plan for the Creative District. In the upcoming months, these drafts will be shared with the community to ensure that they accurately reflect the community’s vision.
